Driving down the Dalmatian coast

We drove from Split to Ston which is a little way short of Dubrovnik.  With the Adriatic Sea on our left and the jagged coast speckled with offshore islands and dotted with historic cities, it is a very nice drive.  Here are some of the bays and towns along the way.

We stopped for a picnic lunch.  The promised diagrammed picnic table turned out to be only a plank of wood but we had shade and a nice view so who could complain.

A bell tower on the way

and some lovely lakes.

On our way to Orebic to go on the car ferry to the island of Korcula tomorrow, we stopped to get lodgings and to eat at Vila Koruna at Mali Ston where Rick Stein ate fresh oysters in his cooking series.

We are certain Rick did not stay at the villa,as it is a bit basic for him accommodation-wise but we eagerly await the fixed price menu this evening.  Seafood features heavily and I am hoping for some nice photos of the food.  Ston is world famous for its oysters, which they have been farming for centuries and they win prizes all over the world - so the placards tell you.  There is oyster tasting.

My spaghetti with prawns, served in a giant shell.

Part of the old city wall in Mali Ston.

We then set off for Orebic, a 60 kms drive down a thin peninsula with vertiginous roads once again, with heart in my mouth, to catch the ferry to the island of Korcula.  We took the car across so we could drive around the island.
