San Sebastian

Pretty, bustling, busy and expensive San Sebastian - here we are.  Our accommodation is, as expected, beautifully central, right in the heart of the old city.

Our bustling street.  Full of people coming and going about their business.  Mainly visitors, we judge, but once again, overwhelmingly Spanish speaking.

The terrace on the fourth floor at our hostel.

Suddenly an attractive older woman appeared on one of the balconies opposite, ready for a little sun baking and she agreed to be photographed.

Tapas bars, or pintxos (pronounced pintchos) are everywhere.  We went to one of the bars recommended in an article in the SMH Saturday Travel Section on the pintxos of San Sebastian which I have kept.  It is Ganbara which is just around the corner from where we are staying.  I think we have been spoiled by travelling elsewhere in Spain as we found the much lauded pintxos here over-rated and expensive.  The ones we sampled at Santona were much more reasonably priced and equal in taste.  In fact, I recall the fried soft shell crabs there as being superior to anything here so far.  The photo above is one of the bars right in our street where we may go later today.  We are hoping that Ganbara's reputation may have influenced its pricing.

Plaza de la Constitucion, the largest square in the city.

A couple of sculptures we came across.

Women often want to drape themselves across such sculptures as they are photographed by adoring partners.  I was not tempted to lay down between these two figures.

This rather ugly boxes of buildings is the Kursaal, the cultural and conference centre.  It is across the bridge in the newer part of the city.  The two buildings were designed to represent two beached rocks.

Next to the Kursaal is a city beach, crowded and, to us, rather uninviting.

A view of another city beach near the old centre.

But get an eyeful of this view of it!

The city view from Mount Igueldo which Andrew of course went up.  The island in the middle is Santa Klara Island.

The Town Hall.

A rather fancy merry-go-around.

Two rather lovely columns on either side of one of the bridges across the river.
