This is some of the finest walking country in Spain where Andrew was heading like a homing pigeon. The jagged mountains straddle southeast Asturia, southwest Cantabria and northern Castilla y Leon. The Picos comprise three limestone massifs.
The little town of Potes is a hugely popular staging post on the southeastern edge of the Picos, with Macizo Andara rising close at hand at Fuente De. Andrew is heading there for the day tomorrow while I stay in Potes, ready for the Monday morning market in the square just outside our posada. This area has been recommended by two independent Canberra sources as a great place for hiking. We plan to stay two days and nights here.
The drive here, as well as the 23 kms drive from Potes to Fuente De, reminded us very much of driving in the Canadian Rockies. The terrain is very similar with jagged peaks looming in front of you.
You can glimpse the cable car above, or what is referred to here as the teleferico de Fuente De. Andrew intends to catch it to the top and walk down as well as take a few walks along the top while he is up there.
A few photos of the town of Potes.
When in Spain, one needs to seriously adjust one's lifestyle and way of thinking. Dinner before at least 7:30pm is unthinkable and nobody seems to be up until 9:00am at the earliest. Of course the siesta is largely responsible for this. Or rather, the weather is, which I assume dictates the compulsory rest between 3-6pm. But I also assume the same happens during winter so the heat does not fully explain it. Regardless of the reason, one cannot expect anything of a commercial or business nature to occur between the hallowed siesta hours. While Spaniards seem to eat right through the day, dinner proper does not happen much before 8:30pm or even 9:00pm. This poses a little challenge to those of us used to getting up early and going to bed early. I am beginning to more fully appreciate what is meant by the term "When in Spain......."
I have to record that on our second and last night we had the most wonderful bean soup I have ever tasted. It was thick and full of beans, sausage, ham and a chunk of morcilla (black pudding). I will have to try to make one like it when I get back home.
