We got here after all. But heeding people's advice, we are staying at a youth hostel out in the far suburbs and going into the centre of town by metro.
Barcelona is a beautiful city, full of lovely old buildings and full of life. We wondered along the cobblestone lanes of the Gothic quarter and afterwards went along to marvel at the Gaudi masterpieces. I am going to create a separate blog posting for all the Gaudi buildings. This post is for the rest of Barcelona, of which there is much to love and admire.
The Placa Reial flanked by arcades of 19th century neoclassical buildings.
The lamposts by the fountain are Antoni Gaudi's first known works in the city.
The placa seen through the lovely archway.
Palau dela Generalitat - the seat of Catalonia's regional government. It has its own tent embassy just like the one in Canberra 😊
This building with the wonderful courtyard is the General Archive of the Crown of Aragon from the 13th century.
One of three friezes by Picasso on the front of a building.
An attractive and stylish mirror in one of the shops. Had I been closer to home I may have been tempted to purchase it.
I was rather taken by this shop sign. The figures reminded me of the decorations on our Quiddler playing cards which are from the Book of Kells.
One of two 'human statutes',
But Columbus came to life very willingly and even conversed with me. He said he liked my hair 😄
Yet another lovely building.
These three houses are right beside the Gaudi house, Casa Batilo. Also designed by avante garde architects of the age.
La Cathedral.
