Kirkenes

Kirkenes was Norway's most bombed place during WWII, likely for strategic reasons in relation to proximity to the Russian border and Murmansk.

The town is not a major tourist destination but it does receive quite a number of visitors since it is the northern end of the line for the Hurtigruten coastal ferry.  It is also a jumping off point into Russia, which is a mere 15 km from the border.

A panoramic view of the town and the sea beyond.  There is a vast area of lakes, rocks and alpine skiing tracks on the hills above the town.

A suburban street with lovely autumn colours.

A pot plant displayed outside a house.  Note the means of display, a sled base instead of a possible wheelbarrow?

A bomb shelter that has obviously been preserved as a reminder of how this town suffered in WWII.

From here on we are heading back for the southern part of the journey back to Bergen.  We will be visiting some new and some old ports that we stopped at on our way north.  We are continuing to enjoy this wonderful journey and hopefully taking more lovely photos to aid our memory bank.

This beautiful Malamut was at the ferry terminal.  She was very large and very friendly and very photogenic.

These are working huskies.  Someone went to an excursion visiting a husky station and shared this photo with us.  She said that she was amazed at the great variety of huskies she saw.  Many were not like the huskies we are used to seeing in Australia, though many were.  Some looked more like sheep dogs.  But they were all handsome, friendly and looked well cared for.

A handsome, we think, Samoyed in someone's backyard.

Helicopter close up, as it landed in front of the boat.  A person, we think it was a man, took ill and there was a call for a doctor on board.  It was obviously something pretty serious as the ambulance came and was then followed by the helicopter who whisked the ill person away, we don't know where.  I think it will be an enormous expense involved which makes my own expensive root canal treatment in Oslo pale into insignificance,

  1. Can't believe the weather you are having - awesome. Gaynor and I had a few anxious days with the collapse of Bentours - Flight Centre have guaranteed our booking luckily. Continue to enjoy! Val
