We left our larger suitcase in Oslo and are making do with the smaller case for the boat cruise. Jane and Ofer have lent us a warm jacket each as we expect the temperatures to plummet as we head north along the coast and up and down the Norwegian fjords. We did not want to weigh ourselves down with excess luggage all the way from Australia just for this 12 day period so we are grateful we could take advantage of their kindness.
We saw lake after lake all along the journey.
Flat green Norwegian fields near the Oslo end of the journey.
As the train started climbing, the mountains in the background started to be snow capped. 1220m was about the highest we climbed.
We arrived at Bergen at 2:50 pm. I am finally able to take a photo of those painted houses along the waterfront that I have seen on hundreds of photographs of Scandinavian towns.
Here they are closer up. They are as beautiful as I had always imagined.
I could not resist taking this photo of a house in Bergen. I imagine it is a restaurant but I am not sure. It just looks so pretty. This is all of Bergen just for now but we are staying here for a night after we return after the cruise. We then plan to explore the town a little more and certainly want to go up the furnicular railway among other activities.
Our home for the next 12 days, the MS Kong Harald. I believe these Hurtigruten ships used to be cargo boats and delivered the mail to all the outlying islands up an down the coast. They are now passenger ships and they still go up and down the coast but now mainly for the pleasure of their passengers. But they still also deliver some cargo, provide for local traffic of people moving from island to island, and serve as car ferries.
