Longwood Gardens, Kennett Square near Philadelphia

We were recommended to visit this beautiful garden estate and we were very glad that we did.  It is the best botanical garden in the whole country and one of the best gardens in the world.  Pierre du Pont was a great conservator who was aiming to save the trees on the former Pierce Estate that were in 1910 going to be cut down for timber.  The trees were already an arboretum of unusual species.  Not only did he save the trees but he established one of the most beautiful gardens in the world, planting shrubs and more trees on the estate.

The Italian water garden is based on a garden he had seen near Florence and was built to his specifications.

The Main water garden plays coloured fountains at night. Unfortunately these were not in operation when we visited and the only other place we had seen this was in the Bellagio Hotel garden in Las Vegas and it made an indelible impression on us.
