Some of the retail on offer in Heiloo

We had to come and visit one of my favourite op-shops.

This is the Dorcas Winkel, an op-shop in Heiloo which is a chain of shops all over country.  I am told the Heiloo shop sells items worth E2000 a day.  It is really interesting to visit an op shop here, as the items, especially household goods, are often quite different from ones on sale in Australia.  Clothes are clothes and they are no different.

We next went to one of my favourite food shops - the fish shop.  Once again, very different from the ones in Australia.  Above is the tray of fresh herrings of the season.

We had a taste - three of these helpings for E6.  They are delicious.  I would not imagine Aussies would be terribly jealous but we love herrings.  These are pickled in salt and water only.

I am also planning to buy a helping of tuna lasagne later on in the week.  It is all prepared, just needs heating in either the oven or the microwave.  I have never had such a lasagne and am keen to try it.

The other favourite is the cheese shop with the great big rounds of cheeses on display.  We had a taste of two delightful old farm cheeses.

Also, a man in a mobile cheese van comes to Heiloo four times a week.  His cheeses are cheaper than in the shop and he has a huge variety too.

One of the great pleasures of travel is trying different tastes and types of foods everywhere you go.  Our next country Spain will yet again have different tastes from Holland.
