Last glimpses of Slovenia

Predjama Castle stands in a cave halfway up a 127 metre cliff and is one of the very few surviving castle caves in the Alpine foothills.  It is certainly the best preserved and offers valuable information about castle building methods in the middle ages.  The castle is very near the Postojna caves and entrance to both is covered by the one ticket.  Both are impressive, not to be missed sights to visit on a trip to Slovenia.

The view of the village below from the castle.

One of the walls inside.

Constructed stairs in the castle.

The last town in Slovenia we visited was the ancient town of Piran which juts out from Slovenia's small stretch of 46 kms of coastline on the Adriatic sea not far from the Italian port of Trieste.  Ruled by the Venetians from the 13th century until 1797, Piran has retained it medieval loveliness.  Its narrow lanes are very like those in Italy and Italian is the second language here, learnt by schoolchildren.

Looking down on the port side of the town.

One of the town beaches.

The restaurant where we had dinner - fresh sardines from the Adriatic for me and a view of the sea for both of us.

View of one of the town squares where children love going around in scooters, taken from the baroque Church of St Peter looking down on the town.

The last thing we did in Slovenia is go for a walk in Strunjan Nature Reserve just across the bay from Piran where according to the brochure are the highest cliffs on the Adriatic coast, 80 metres.  Difficult to believe after driving along the Dalmatian coast in Croatia but I am quoting the Slovenian walking tracks guide - also confirmed by, what else, Wikipedia.

One of the small beaches below the cliffs where people go to escape the relative crowds.  The beaches here are all stony, not like our golden sanded beaches is OZ.  People carry padded things like camping bedding to sit and lie on.

Let this wonderful view of Piran from across the bay be our last glimpse of Slovenia, the beautiful.  We very much enjoyed our 6 days there.
