Fraeylemaborg

A borg is a small castle in Dutch.  We went to visit this borg near Groningen which is actually a very decent castle.  It is difficult to establish exactly when it was built but parts of it originate in the 1600s.  It is in a lovely park.

and a couple of shots taken inside the borg.

We then went to visit the old fishing village of Termunterzijl just east of the town of Delfzijl.  From the shores you can see right across to Germany which indicates how far in the north of Holland it is.  The lock wall on the canal above left shows all the heraldic shields of the local nobles who paid to have the lock constructed.  The lock was built in 1725 and it was called Arch of Soul.  Termunterzijl was a fishing and trading centre in the 19th century and established a name for itself for peat shipping and it also provided added protection for the port of Delfzij.

We had a lovely lunch of fresh fish after freezing on the walk by the canal right to the end lock which you can see.

  1. A very pretty bed. Are the uprights made of silver or are they painted wood?
And what are the gold 'hats' on the tall porcelain/pottery pieces about?
