Next we visited Mt Vernon which was George and Martha Washington's estate overlooking the mighty Potomac River. It is beautifully situated.
The house in front of the bowling green.
And the view of the Potomac from the house. Isn't it a view to die for? Washington loved his house much the same as Thomas Jefferson loved Monticello. They both inherited their estates. And they were both slave owners but Washington freed his slaves on his death.
As part of the educational programs a lady dressed up as Martha Washington provides a chatty commentary on her life with the General and answers questions.
Sitting in a replica of the lounge with her grand-daughter. It is quite good entertainment and interesting too.
A house less stately but with many personal memories for Andrew. 7222 Beachwood Road, Hollin Hills in Alexandria where he lived with his family approximately 40 years ago on a posting to the US. The boys were all small and they had a very pleasant six months living in the house.
Wow, Has been a while since I was there.
ReplyDeleteLooks like you guys are moving steadily North. (nice pictures and scenery)
ReplyDeleteNature is slow coming this year, saw some ice and snow today along the Ottawa river, but things will look a lot different in a few weeks. If you are looking for a nice place, Longwood Gardens near Philadelphia is beautiful.
Don't forget stopping in Ottawa!
